The dike and road that forms the southern extension of Maple Street (fka Shore Drive) can be seen just to the right of center near the shorter of the two Pacific Power & Light transmission towers. Initially known as "Low Dike A", it was completed by Duhrkop & Wallace in February 1962 at a cost of $24,750. After this photo was taken, the elevation of the dike was raised to its current elevation in two phases. The first phase was completed in August 1965 by B&D Paving at a cost of $14,585 and the second phase was completed in May 1966 by Duhrkop & Wallace at a cost of $46,066. The dike and road forming the western edge of Bingen Harbor (known as "Low Dike B") can be seen halfway up and approximately one-third in from the left of the photograph. It was completed in two phases, both done by Duhrkop & Wallace. The first phase (shown here) was completed in May 1962 for $9,525 while the second phase was completed in May 1963 for $38,123. The beginning of the SDS peninsula can be seen extending toward the lower right corner of the photograph.
